A Devotion for August 24 – St. Bartholomew Day

Some believe that St. Bartholomew was Nathanael in the gospel accounts. At first, Nathanael was skeptical remembering the popular belief that nothing good could come out of Nazareth. Then he met Jesus, it was the smallest of signs, and yet his heart was converted. Popular belief is that Bartholomew brought the gospel to the Armenians.

Jesus promised Nathanael that he would see even greater signs to affirm his belief that truly Jesus was the Christ, the son of God.

We often demand indications that we may know that God is God, but perhaps we should be glad simply for the opportunity to know him, and not require greater and greater signs to affirm something that we have known to be true in the past. How would our lives be changed if we stepped out in faith instead of sitting in fear waiting for a sign?
